The IVIS Spectrum is a bioluminescence and fluorescence in vivo imaging system, which allows for non-invasive
tracking and measurement of disease progression, cellular activity and gene expression.
For those of you who have previously used our IVIS 100, you will find that this new
system is truly state of the art in comparison. It is loaded with features, from the handy workstation, to the ever so
easy to use software, to the advanced analysis capabilities.
The fluorescence mode can be used to image and quantify all commonly used fluorophores, although we recommend for users
to stick with IR dyes (such as Cy5.5 or XF680) if possible to reduce autofluorescence effects. This system has two modes
for fluorescence imaging: epi-illumination (from the top) and trans-illumination (from the bottom). Epi-illumination is
the standard fluorescence excitation mode and is good for features close to the surface. Trans-illumination allows for
imaging of features deeper within the animal. Besides the basic fluorescence modes, this system also has spectral
un-mixing.
Bioluminescence allows for tracking gene expression by measuring light emitted from luciferase tagged genes of interest.
The bioluminescence mode on this system is similar to that of the IVIS 100.
One of the attractive features of the system, is the 3D tomography capability, which allows you to obtain
3D data from either bioluminescence or fluorescence images. You can use the 3D data, for instance to determine the
depth of a tumour in your animal or use the built in Mouse Organ Atlas to determine from which organ your signal is coming from.
Among the automated features on the system, is an imaging wizard, which can help you easily and quickly setup
bioluminescence or fluorescence image sequences. And the auto-exposure mode is handy for initially imaging animals
for which the magnitude of the signal is unknown.
